A distinct 2014 Mini Countryman themed after the late David Bowie was stolen from a dealership lot in Murray, Utah recently. It’s how thieves got the key for it and another Mini which should serve as a warning to customers dropping their vehicle off for servicing.
Dealership tech wrecks out speeding in customer’s vehicle.
The owner of the Bowie Mini understandably seems pretty bummed about his car getting boosted from Mini of Murray on a Sunday night. He explained to KSL News he dropped the car off there for servicing on Monday, leaving the keys in the drop box provided for customer convenience.
And that was his big mistake.
A thief came along and pried the drop box open, we’re guessing with a crowbar or some similar tool, taking out the keys for both Minis which were just sitting on the lot. It was almost too easy for the criminal.
Since his car is customized and quite recognizable, the owner is hoping his Bowie Mini will be recovered. Sadly, we think the lightning bolt on the hood was probably removed immediately for that very reason, but you never know for sure.
Dealerships are big targets for car thieves these days, so we’re hardly surprised this happened. While it’s sad this guy and another person lost their rides, we would never, ever leave our car keys in a drop box overnight.
The fact is even inside a dealership, your keys still might not be all that secure. But in a box that’s accessible from outside, there’s little stopping a determined thief from getting them. This is the unfortunate truth about the world in which we live.
We also recommend putting a tracking device or two in your vehicle in case something like this happens.
