A 2015 Ram 1500’s airbag deployed violently as the truck sat parked in one of the most bizarre cases we’ve seen in a while. The owner, who lives in Volusia County, Florida at first had no idea what happened to her pickup, later realizing the catastrophic damage was from the airbag exploding.
Dodge Ram passenger killed by an airbag.
We don’t recall ever seeing an airbag just go off spontaneously in a parked vehicle that hasn’t been hit by something, but that’s what the owner told WFTV happened to her Ram. The passenger-side rear curtain airbag just blew up, shredding a shocking amount of the interior and the vehicle structure.
Not only was the glass blown out of that window, the headliner is obviously torn apart, as is a sun visor up front. What’s truly scary is the hole in the roof of the Ram 1500, the force powerful enough to rip through the sheet metal, almost like a shotgun blast at point blank.
As the local news mentions, that particular airbag has been under a nationwide recall since 2021. Over 200,000 Ram 1500s are included in the recall.
The owner said she knew about the recall for three years, but every time she tried getting it fixed on her truck she was told the parts weren’t available. So that’s why the original faulty airbag was still installed.
What’s shocking about this case is how Stellantis reportedly responded after the owner took the Ram to a dealership for repairs. The auto giant stated, “We are responsible for the recall repairs only, we are unable to cover any subsequent damages.”
That’s probably enough to make you laugh or cuss up a storm, maybe even both. Stellantis is really going to try ducking all responsibility for this one and boy we think this could be a public relations nightmare for the automaker.
If you have a Ram 1500 under the side curtain airbag recall, you might want to get that replaced ASAP. The explosion from this one looks brutal.
