Car thieves are inherently selfish and so they don’t care if they hurt other people, like this guy who stole a business’ box truck while an employee was in the rear. Thankfully, that person wasn’t seriously injured, even though she was hanging onto the back in surveillance footage of the theft.
Theft victim chases down suspects with his own car.
This happened recently in Beaverton, Oregon at a delicatessen. Employees were loading food into delivery trucks early in the morning when the suspect climbed into the cab of one, fired up the engine, and took off.
We can imagine the employees didn’t think anything of leaving the keys in the ignition because who wants to steal a deli delivery truck? Well, a lot of people think thieves don’t want their crappy old car, only to later have it stolen. It’s truly amazing what criminals will swipe these days.
Caught off guard, the one employee who was loading stuff into the back of that box truck walks to the very back and holds on, looking around towards the cab. She was probably trying to figure out which of her coworkers was jumping the gun and moving the vehicle before the cargo was ready to go and the door was closed.
Instead, she found out the guy in the driver’s seat wasn’t an employee of the company as he gassed it, taking off. You can see in the footage the woman jumps out of the truck in the parking lot. WTHR says she only suffered some bruising, so she was lucky.
The news station also reports that the suspect was caught thanks to an Apple AirTag placed in the truck. That might sound silly, but those simple devices can lead to the recovery of a stolen vehicle in a hurry.
