A lot of people, including us, fantasize about owning a classic Porsche. But most are either dreaming about a svelte 911 or a 356, so this 1968 Porsche 912 might not be on your bucket list. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth considering.
Would you go for this Shelby GT350 instead?
Save a few details, the original 912s are almost identical in looks to the 911s of the same era. This one is a Carrera RS with a cool ducktail and Fuchs wheels. You’d probably get a lot of admiration tooling around town in it.

Just know the big difference between this and a 911 is power. This and the other first-gen 912s come with a 1.6-liter flat-four sourced from the Porsche 356 SC. The automaker’s engineers even detuned it a little, dropping output from 95 to 90-horspower to boost low-end torque and increase stability.
The 912 is all about compromise and was created as a more affordable version of the 911. That’s why the asking price for this one on eBay is just $44,912 OBO. Try scooping a ’68 Porsche 911 for anywhere near that (one that’s running and looks good like this).
According to the dealer selling this classic Porsche, it “runs and drives great” with a motor rebuilt in 2018. During that process, displacement was increased to 1.8-liters, so it should be a little bit sportier to drive. That reportedly cost the owner $12,395, money we’d say was well spent.

Also included in this 912 is a 901 5-speed manual transaxle, which the dealer says works well, as does the clutch. Plus, the frame is supposed to be free of any rust. In the images, we don’t spot any troubling blemishes, so this car looks to be a turnkey example you can show off from the get-go.
The only question is would you go for this 1968 Porsche 912?
