Who’s At Fault In This U-Turn Multi-Car Pileup?

We’ve seen some bizarre traffic accidents, but this one involving a U-turn that unfolds into a multi-car pileup is one of the craziest we’ve witnessed in a while. Our suspicion is not everyone will see this crash (or really series of crashes) the same way, with some blaming one party and others another.

In the footage we’re watching a traffic camera that’s over a T-intersection where one road terminates into a six-lane street. The camera is pointed at the six-lane street, where we see a car signal left, crawl to a stop at the intersection, and wait to turn.

The issue is that driver isn’t looking to turn onto the street that terminates at the intersection. Instead, they’re pointed in the opposite direction, attempting to make a U-turn. It’s obvious the driver who stops behind this person is confused.

That’s the first big item of debate: is this a legal U-turn or is trying to make one from that lane illegal? We think that question alone could start a lot of fights.

A second car stacks up behind the one signaling a left turn. Eventually, they both pull around the stopped vehicle. More traffic comes along and a car almost rear-ends the stopped, signaling vehicle, pulling over and hitting the brakes at the last second.

Finally, the signaling driver feels it’s clear enough to make the U-turn safely. While they do just that, only slowly, two cars in the left and center lanes come up fast on the person who swerved to miss the person waiting to turn. For reasons only known to them, the stopped car starts going and swerves left, hitting the car in the left lane.

Both of those vehicles keep going left, traveling into oncoming traffic where at least one car hits them and spins out.

During all of that, the person who did the U-turn (you decide if that was legal or not) slowly drives away like nothing happened. We’ve never seen an accident quite like this and hope to never again witness such a thing.
