A Florida man employed in the automotive sales industry has been hit with twenty-one criminal charges related to an alleged title washing operation in which vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles were processed through a series of transactions designed to make them appear to have clean titles when sold to unsuspecting buyers. Title washing is a fraud scheme that causes real harm to consumers who purchase vehicles they believe to be free of major damage history, only to discover after the sale that the vehicle was involved in a serious accident, flood, or other event that should have been disclosed. The scale of the indictment suggests the operation was substantial and persistent.

Florida has been a particularly active state for title-related automotive fraud, partly because of the state’s large population of older vehicle owners, active used car market, and the volume of vehicles that move through the state following hurricane-related damage. Law enforcement and state regulators have been increasing enforcement against title washing operations in recent years as consumer protection agencies document the harm these schemes cause to buyers who have limited ability to independently verify a vehicle’s full history. The charges against the defendant, if proven, would represent one of the more significant title fraud prosecutions in the region in recent years.
