We have yet to see a single police chase involving a suspect in a Ford Fusion actually getting away. Maybe one exists somewhere out there, just we haven’t run across it yet. At least in this dashcam footage from Arkansas State Police, the suspect didn’t die after crashing his Fusion, something which seems to be all too common.
Florida trooper treats a fleeing Mercedes to a nice PIT.
In the footage, the trooper is sitting on the side of Interstate 30 in Hempstead County when the Ford sedan rockets by at 112 mph in a 75 mph zone. In most states, speeding like that is an arrestable offense.
As the trooper went Code 3, chasing the suspect down, the guy laid on the accelerator and swerved his Fusion onto the shoulder multiple times to get around slower traffic. If you look at the trooper’s speed, he’s going about 140 mph and just keeping up with the Ford.
While that move is stupid, the guy suddenly shuts off his lights, blacking out the sedan. Since this is a rural stretch of interstate, it’s difficult to see him at that point. This little maneuver constitutes quite the danger to other drivers.
After snaking through some traffic, narrowly missing other cars, the guy takes an exit. You can still see him in the footage even with the Ford Fusion blacked out, but his illuminated brake lights stand out like a sore thumb, really making the risk he took senseless.
Instead of taking backroads, the suspect tries getting back onto the interstate, only he can’t stick the curve on the on-ramp. It’s not even that bad, but the Ford just goes flying off past the shoulder, off-roading.
As the guy steers back onto the on-ramp, the trooper meets him with what we call the “Arkansas State Police love tap” testing out if the Fusion’s side curtain airbags still work. Thankfully they do, but it’s also probably the curtain call for the American sedan.
