Rumors about the return of the Hemi V8 have been swirling almost since it bowed out almost entirely from the Stellantis (Dodge, Ram, Jeep) model lineup. However, a new report claims the performance engine lineup is in fact returning, with the 5.7-liter, 6.4-liter, and even the supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat making a thunderous comeback.

Report claims Stellantis former CEO was solely responsible for cancelling the Hemi V8.

This squares with rumors that Dodge engineers, anticipating Stellantis would in fact backpedal on its decision to go all-in with electrification and the inline-six Hurricane engines, designed the new Charger to accommodate the Hemi V8s.

That report, from Mopar Insiders, claims Stellantis is aiming to have Hemi V8 production fired up again sometime in August at the Dundee Engine Plant in Michigan.

Stellantis has been sitting on a stock of already-assembled Hemi V8s used for he last few products offered with them. Some feared once that was depleted the V8 would be gone forever. Thankfully the automaker has listened to consumers instead of telling everyone what they want.

As excited as this news makes us, we don’t think the return of the Hemi V8 line will necessarily be a magic bullet to fix everything wrong with Stellantis in the North American market. After all, Mustang sales are down and there’s still a V8 option in that model line. Granted, increased prices coupled with high interest rates probably aren’t helping there.

We’ll have to wait and see just how much Stellantis wants to charge for vehicles with a Hemi after the short hiatus. With car prices continuing to climb at an unbelievable rate over the last few years, something has to give in the market at some point.

All that aside, it’s great to hear the Hemi really is making a triumphant return. Getting rid of that has been by far the worst decision the young Stellantis has made so far. It’s time to make muscle cars great again.

  1. The car companies & writers of these articles just don’t get it. These cars, & camaros & mustangs, are not supposed to be JUST expensive high performance muscle car versions! In fact, back in the day, few were sold with the hi po motors! Most of the millions sold were AFFORDABLE regular gas base v8s & sixes with not that many options ordered – to keep the price of the car & insurance down. Very few came with cruise control, & p/w were not even available on ’65-’70 mustangs! Even a base $4300 ’73 trans am had no radio!, no hood bird , no p/w & no a/c! A base firebird formula did not even have p/s or p/b. That’s why i saw all the above cars all over the place back in the day. These days, i can go days or even weeks b4 i see even ONE modern camaro, stang or challenger!
