A Memphis, Tennessee couple is facing serious criminal charges after one of them ran over a vehicle repossession agent who was attempting to recover a car on which the couple had defaulted on their loan payments. The incident, which left the repo agent with a severe injury to his head, represents one of the most extreme responses to vehicle repossession that authorities in the region have recorded and has drawn significant attention from both law enforcement and the vehicle finance industry. The victim was taken to hospital in serious condition, and the couple was arrested shortly after the incident.
Vehicle repossession is a lawful process that repossession agents conduct on behalf of lenders who have secured a legal right to recover collateral after a borrower defaults on their loan. While the experience of losing a vehicle to repossession is undoubtedly stressful and disruptive, violence against repo agents is a crime that carries severe legal consequences. The Memphis case is an extreme example, but confrontations between borrowers and repossession agents are not uncommon, and the repo industry has been advocating for stronger legal protections for its workers who regularly work in environments where tempers and stakes run high.
