If you’re not aware, Nissan has issued big recalls for hood latches possibly failing. Even though a woman in the Boston area had her Altima supposedly repaired by a dealer as part of one of those recalls, the hood later flew open as she was driving down the highway.
Ford issued a recall for a part that can fall off as the car is driving down the road.
Needless to say, having your hood open as you’re driving is never an ideal situation. Not only does it obstruct your view, depending on how the hinges are designed, it could smash your windshield. These incidents can also lead to a crash, which is why the recall was serious.
The woman in this story took her Altima to a Nissan dealer to get the hood latch fixed as part of the safety recall. After it was supposedly fixed, the hood flew open as she was driving down the highway.
Thankfully, she was able to safely pull over and put the hood down. But as she drove it to the dealership to get it fixed for the second time, the hood flew open again. For reasons unexplained, the Nissan was totaled out after that.
Images of the Altima filmed by CBS Boston show some dents and paint damage to the hood and the sunglass holder dangling from the roof. Otherwise, the sedan looks fine. We wonder why the latch repair didn’t work, but there are zero answers from Nissan.
Others have complained to NHTSA about their Nissan hood latch failing after recall work has been performed. Not only have a number of Altimas been recalled for this issue, so have Pathfinders. We don’t know why supposedly repaired hood latches have failed afterward.
To be fair, it’s not just Nissan which suffers these kinds of problems (lest Nissan whines to us again about covering its foibles). Ford has had to issue at least two recalls recently to fix repairs made under a previous recall.
