Brave New World: Porsche And Audi Recall Over 62,000 Cars Over Software Problems

Porsche and Audi, both part of the Volkswagen Group, have issued a recall for over 62,000 cars thanks to problems with the software. This sort of thing is becoming more common as cars increasingly rely on software to run processes, similar to how your phone or computer need constant updates.

Dodge is dealing with two Durango-related lawsuits.

However, without over-the-air updates like your phone or computer, cars will have to be seen at a dealership service department each time new software is needed. This is one issue where we think Tesla, and a growing number of other automakers, hit the bullseye.

For its portion, Porsche is recalling just over 8,500 2024 and 2025 Macan electric crossovers thanks to a software issue affecting the rearview camera. Drivers might see a blurry image or nothing at all, something we’ve seen in other vehicle recalls, although that might have been for a different reason.

Audi is recalling over 44,000 2021 model year A6, A6 Allroad, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, RS 6 Avant, RS 7, RS Q8, S6, S7, S8, SQ7, and SQ8 vehicles. Thanks to a software fault, the virtual cockpit or digital instrument cluster will suddenly go blank.

That means the driver can’t see the vehicle speed or other critical information, which isn’t a good thing at all. To get the software updated, Audi owners will have to visit the dealer service department and wait for the new stuff to be installed.

Again, wouldn’t it be better if the software update were just installed as the car sits in your garage overnight? With more and more software problems in modern vehicles, it seems dealerships and vehicle owners would benefit by not having to bring their ride in for updates.
