With a 25 percent tariff levied against any car assembled outside of the United States, Ford reportedly is considering pumping up prices to compensate. While some might think that’s the only way to manage the situation, Hyundai is saying it will keep prices where they’re at instead.
After 100 years, Chrysler is basically dead.
This development with Ford comes after the automaker extended discounts to shoppers in early April, a promotion which runs through June 2. But right after that ends, the Blue Oval might pass on the tariffs paid on imported vehicles built in May and moving forward.
As CBT News points out, Ford sits in the best position to ride out the tariffs since 80 percent of models sold in the US are assembled domestically. If that’s the case, why is the company looking to pump up prices?
Apparently, Hyundai doesn’t feel a price increase is necessary at all. North America CEO Randy Parker told media at the 2025 New York Automotive Forum the only numbers he plans on hiking up are sales figures.
“Sell like hell,” is what Parker calls the strategy. Considering the brand keeps breaking sales records, it’s perhaps not a bad move to pursue. After all, selling more cars could help the company absorb tariff costs, not passing them on to consumers, at least for a time.
Hyundai also recently announced it’s investing more in its US manufacturing base. The automaker’s “Metaplant” opened in Georgia in March and a new steel plant is being constructed in Louisiana. One could say the Korean company is doubling down on this market.
All this comes after President Trump threw out there the possibility of giving some sort of tariff reprieve to automakers. He acknowledged it might take some time for companies to realign their manufacturing strategies, hence the olive branch extended towards them.
