It’s no secret Italian automaker Maserati has really been struggling as of late, but a new report sheds more light on the situation. Apparently, the brand is in peril of being sold by Stellantis as the multinational company which also owns Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Chrysler is looking to lean down.

Dodge issues a hilarious recall for its electric car.

After all, Stellantis has an industry-leading 14 brands and let’s face it, some are dogs. The Netherlands-based automaker has been struggling itself as of late and some believe the path forward is to dump the dead weight.

While there’s been talk about which brands Stellantis might dump, a new report from Reuters claims serious talks inside the company about selling off Maserati have been going on for weeks.

This might be one of the first big decisions made by incoming CEO Antonio Filosa. For now, it seems publicly Stellantis executives will either not comment on the possible move or will flat out deny it.

But we’ve been in the industry long enough to know denials of moves sometimes precede them coming to fruition. And we don’t think those executives really know what Filosa plans to do once he’s at the helm.

Back in the Fiat Chrysler days, Maserati lived in Ferrari’s shadow constantly. Some believed with Ferrari being spun off the other Italian brand would finally get the attention it always deserved. That hasn’t happened.

Instead, Maserati sales are way down, with only 11,300 units being sold in 2024, less than half what it did in 2023. As a result, the brand lost about $298 million.

Even worse, Maserati is dead in the water with no new model launches in the works after its reworked business plan from last year was suspended. Apparently, a new plan has been crafted and will be presented to Filosa soon after he begins work.

Part of the problem with Maserati, from our perspective, is it doesn’t have a strong identity or direction. Sure, it has a proud heritage and that’s great for marketing, but when the current stable of vehicles look and feel uninspiring, that only goes so far.
