Car Thieves Are Using WiFi Blockers To Defeat Your Security Cameras

Car thieves have decided to help prevent their victims from having evidence to use against them by using WiFi blockers to disable security cameras on homes. We’ve known about this method for years, but it’s been rarely used. However, an increasing number of car thieves are turning to the tech to cover their tracks.

Car thieves rip donuts on the street outside of a dealership.

After all, having video footage of your vehicle being stolen can prove valuable in tracking down the thieves. Sometimes, criminals aren’t smart enough to cover their faces, so showing it on the footage gives authorities enough to prosecute thieves.

Police can study the footage to determine what method the thieves used to steal your ride. Other valuable clues might be in the video.

But WiFi blockers provide another key benefit: with the cameras disabled, you won’t receive notifications of movement, reducing the chance you’ll catch the crooks in the act of stealing your car.

A WiFi blocker or jammer overloads your network with a strong, conflicting signal, preventing devices like your cameras from talking to the wireless router. When thieves get such a device close enough to your surveillance cameras, it’s almost like they were never there because there’s no recording.

There are ways to prevent these types of attacks. First of all, your network should have proper encryption and authentication. If you don’t know what those are, hire a home network expert to analyze and possibly fix yours.

Also, switch all security devices to 5GHz instead of the more common 2.4 GHz signal, which is easier for jammers to target.

You can also get an anti-jamming device which will detect WiFi jammers and reverse the signal hey put out. These devices will also send you an alert whenever a WiFi blocker is detected.

Of course, there is one surefire way to prevent criminals from using WiFi blockers to defeat your security cameras: get wired cameras instead. They’re more expensive to have installed, but wired cameras have other benefits.
