How the Theft Occurred
According to authorities, the incident began in Oneonta, where the police cruiser was at a shop for routine maintenance. Investigators say a suspect broke in after hours, took the keys, and drove off in the vehicle. The stolen SUV traveled through multiple counties over roughly two hours before officers located it in Rensselaer County, near Albany.
How Police Tracked the Vehicle
Every New York State Police cruiser built since 2009 is equipped with GPS tracking, which allowed dispatch to monitor the SUV’s location throughout the incident. That tracking capability played a key role in officers being able to intercept the vehicle without a prolonged pursuit.
