A Devastating Loss on Highway 83
A Colorado Springs family is grieving after a stolen vehicle crashed head-on into their car on Nov. 24, killing a father and three children. The collision happened just before 4:40 p.m. on Highway 83 in Douglas County, where investigators say a stolen Toyota hatchback veered out of control and crossed into oncoming traffic.
The Victims
Those killed at the scene were 35-year-old Alvin Corado, his children MaKenlee, 11, and Toretto, 8, along with 12-year-old family friend Jase Green.
How the Stolen Vehicle Ended Up on the Road
Investigators determined the Toyota had been stolen roughly an hour before the crash from a parking garage in Aurora, where police say 31-year-old Walter Huling forcibly removed a woman from the driver’s seat before fleeing in the vehicle. Officials say Huling lost control of the stolen car for reasons still under investigation. The crash was severe enough to heavily damage both vehicles, and Huling was killed instantly.
A Lengthy Criminal History and Questions About Supervision
According to law enforcement records, Huling had a criminal history spanning more than a decade, including cases involving assault, protection order violations, burglary, bribery, and DUI. He was on parole at the time of the crash, a detail that has raised questions about the terms of his release and the level of supervision he was under.
Two Children Survive With Serious Injuries
Two other children in the vehicle survived the crash but sustained serious injuries. Thirteen-year-old Mia Corado remained hospitalized with multiple internal injuries, including fractures and lung trauma, while 14-year-old Jordan Green was reported to be recovering in stable condition. Family members said Mia remained conscious throughout the crash and has since recalled the experience in detail.
Community Response
Community members have organized support for the affected families. A vigil for MaKenlee and Toretto is planned at New Song Church in Colorado Springs, and a fundraising campaign has been established to help cover funeral costs, medical expenses, and support for the children’s mother as she remains at Mia’s bedside. Teachers and classmates have also spoken about the loss, describing MaKenlee as a bright presence whose absence is deeply felt within her school community.
