An Unattended Bus and an Unusual Opportunity
An unusual bus theft in Hamilton, Ontario ended without injury after a man drove off in a city bus and, remarkably, continued running its scheduled stops as if nothing unusual were happening. The incident occurred on the evening of Nov. 11, when a Hamilton Street Railway bus pulled into a terminal and the driver stepped away for a short break, leaving the vehicle unattended.
A Theft That Looked Like Business as Usual
During that brief window, police say a 36-year-old man boarded the bus and drove off with passengers still on board. Rather than fleeing the route or abandoning the bus, he continued following the scheduled line, stopping at multiple points to let riders on and off just as they would during a normal commute. Officers later noted he even declined to let one rider board after noticing an expired transit pass.
A Calm End to an Unusual Pursuit
Police monitored the bus as it continued along its route and eventually brought it to a safe stop. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, and authorities confirmed no injuries occurred during the unauthorized detour. The bus itself remained undamaged throughout the episode.
Still a Serious Criminal Matter
Despite the almost routine nature of the theft, investigators emphasized that taking an unauthorized public vehicle remains a serious criminal offense regardless of how the situation played out. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including theft over $5,000, possession over $5,000, obstructing police, and driving while prohibited. Police have not released his name.
Investigation Continues
Transit officials and law enforcement expressed relief that passengers were unharmed and that the incident ended without further complications. Investigators are continuing to look into exactly how the man gained access to the bus and managed to operate it through several scheduled stops before police intervened.
