Car Linked to 2003 Christmas Eve Disappearance Recovered From North Carolina Creek

The vehicle belonging to a man who disappeared more than two decades ago has been recovered from a creek in eastern North Carolina, according to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies announced Thursday that a 1992 Pontiac Grand Am connected to Travis Lamont Lynch was found submerged in Turkey Creek along Old Middlesex Road. The discovery was made Wednesday afternoon after authorities received a report of a vehicle located in the water near the creek.

Lynch was last seen on the morning of Christmas Eve in 2003. Investigators said he had left his girlfriend’s home in the town of Middlesex and was driving back to his residence in Wilson. He never arrived, and his disappearance has remained unresolved since that day.

Following the report, deputies responded to the scene and worked to remove the vehicle from the creek. After the car was recovered, Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone requested assistance from the FBI’s Submersion Evidence Team to conduct additional investigation in and around the area where the vehicle was located.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the recovery of the vehicle does not yet provide answers about Lynch’s whereabouts. Authorities have not reported finding Lynch or any human remains in connection with the vehicle at this time.

Multiple agencies assisted in the recovery and investigation efforts. The sheriff’s office acknowledged support from the Bailey Fire Department, Middlesex Fire Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, the Rocky Mount Dive Team, Nash County Emergency Medical Services, and the FBI.

Officials said the case remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine how the vehicle came to rest in the creek and whether the discovery may provide new insight into Lynch’s disappearance.

The sheriff’s office continues to seek information from the public that could assist with the case. Anyone with knowledge related to the disappearance of Travis Lamont Lynch or the recovered vehicle has been asked to contact the Nash County Sheriff’s Office at 252-459-4121.

The recovery marks a significant development in a case that has remained unanswered since 2003, as investigators continue efforts to piece together what happened on Christmas Eve more than 20 years ago.
