Illinois Man Leaves Dodge Challenger on Tracks, Train Destroys Vehicle in Quincy Incident

A bizarre early-morning incident in western Illinois ended with a destroyed Dodge Challenger Hellcat and multiple charges for a Quincy man, after a freight train slammed into the abandoned vehicle sitting on active railroad tracks.

The crash occurred early Sunday morning when a 27-year-old man drove the high-powered car onto a set of tracks in Quincy. Video footage later showed the driver mistakenly treating the tracks as a roadway, traveling along them until the vehicle became lodged and unable to move.

The incident was captured on camera by Virtual Railfan, a network that operates more than 100 live cameras at railroad locations worldwide. The video shows the Challenger pulling onto the tracks before becoming stuck. The driver repeatedly revved the engine in an attempt to free the car, but the vehicle remained immobilized.

As the driver continued trying to dislodge the car, a passenger exited through the passenger-side door. Moments later, at least two additional individuals appeared near the scene and attempted to help. Despite the growing urgency, the vehicle remained stranded.

Soon after, the sound of a train whistle could be heard in the distance. Railroad crossing lights activated behind the Challenger, signaling an approaching freight train. At that point, those outside the vehicle shouted for the driver to abandon the car. The driver eventually exited just before the train arrived.

The freight train struck the Challenger and pushed it down the tracks before coming to a stop. According to Quincy police, the vehicle was shoved approximately 300 feet as a result of the impact. No injuries were reported.

Police cited the driver for driving under the influence, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Authorities did not release additional details about the driver or the condition of the passengers involved.

The dramatic footage has circulated widely online, serving as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving and the severe consequences of entering active railroad areas.
