The accident occurred around 8 a.m. in Coweta County, according to Georgia State Patrol (GSP). The driver, identified as Eldred McNeil, was changing lanes across the southbound lanes when his Dodge Challenger veered off the road onto the west shoulder, resulting in a deadly rotation.

McNeil’s vehicle then struck a ditch and subsequently a tree on the driver’s side. The impact was so severe it caused the car to split in half, GSP reported.

In the aftermath, McNeil was ejected from the car and unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.

The harrowing event led to a temporary closure of the southbound lanes of I-85 for approximately an hour and a half. The lanes have since been reopened for traffic.

GSP confirmed that McNeil was an Alabama resident. Further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.

This devastating accident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by loss of vehicle control. Drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant on the roads at all times.
