A road rage fight between the driver of a Toyota Tundra and a Mercedes crossover turned deadly when the latter pulled out a gun, shooting the other man dead. The gunman, identified as 46-year-old Geoffrey E. Hammond, then turned the gun on a bystander filming the whole thing, shooting him as well.

The man behind the camera, 48-year-old Samuel Gomez, was visiting Portland, Oregon from Phoenix, Arizona when he saw 47-year-old Ryan Martin get out of his truck to confront Hammond, as originally reported by The Oregonian. Moments before the two were exchanging rude hand gestures after some disagreement on the road, reportedly something about how Hammond was parked on the road.
Martin approached Hammond’s Mercedes unarmed, tapped on the driver’s window, and Hammond responded by putting at least one round in the man’s chest. Noticing Gomez was filming, Hammond shot him as well. We had no idea a camera was considered a deadly threat. Same with window tapping.
Reportedly, Hammond tried shooting Martin after he was on the ground with fatal wounds, but the gun jammed. Once he was able to clear the malfunction, the man then shot Gomez. He’s now facing charges for second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and fourth-degree assault.
Hammond turned himself in and admitted to shooting both men. In the official affidavit, it reportedly states Hammond “believed he was justified in doing so because Ryan Martin menaced him and because Sam Gomez might have had a weapon.”
We know road rage has been on the rise in many cities throughout the US and elsewhere. Often, the incidents end with aggressive behavior, maybe a car crash, and perhaps some punches thrown. But we’re seeing more deadly incidents like this. It’s all so senseless.
