One of the most effective tools police can use against criminals as they flee is a helicopter. While not always available, the aircraft with telescoping cameras can track cars as they drive at high speeds and try ditching any cops on the ground, never aware they’re being watched from above.

Just such a scenario played out a couple weeks ago in Nashville, Tennessee after a man stole a Dodge Charger Scat Pack, pushing it well past 100 mph on city streets to get away from police officers. The department’s aerial unit was tracking his every move, allowing those on the ground to find and arrest him with ease.
The guy engaged in all kinds of tricks to lose police, including traveling in the lanes of oncoming traffic. Driving the muscle car to an apartment complex parking lot, he ditched it and tried running away on foot, perhaps believing he got away with the perfect crime. Instead, police knew exactly where he was and caught him quickly.
Because these helicopters can be far away from a vehicle they’re tracking, suspects usually have no idea they’re being watched at all. It’s not like the helicopter is hovering a few hundred feet overhead, making plenty of noise as it’s prominently visible.
We’ve seen this tactic used countless times and effectively. Just the helicopters can actually make any arrests but they’re wonderful for directing units on the ground since tools like infrared cameras help them to keep an eye on those below.
Car thieves and other criminals should realize even if they can’t see police, they might be under surveillance at any time.
