The theft of a Nissan Altima in Atlanta led to the capture not only of the car theft suspect but also an alleged police impersonator. These are the kinds of two-for-one deals law enforcement just love.
Alleged police impersonator tries pulling over off-duty police captain.
It all started when a woman who was filling up her Nissan Altima at a gas station had someone steal it right before her very eyes. We see this sort of thing all too often, with criminals taking full advantage of the convenience of push-button ignitions.
After combing the area, we see in dashcam footage as officers find the stolen car in a mall parking lot. As they try boxing it in, one officer approaches on foot, sliding a Stop Stick in front of one of the rear tires just before the suspect cranks the wheel and drives over a barrier, then speeding off.
The chase takes to the highway but with the one tire flattened, the driver soon loses control, putting the car nose-first into the concrete median wall. Even though the driver hopped the barrier, ran across the other lanes of traffic, and disappeared through some woods into a nearby neighborhood, he was quickly apprehended.
A man who emerges from the backseat says him and a woman were just getting a ride from the driver and didn’t know anything. But after they’re taken into custody, officers recognize the guy as a suspect who’s been seen wearing an Atlanta police jacket, allegedly posing as an APD officer.
That’s when they start to whoop and holler, realizing they just nabbed someone their colleagues have been looking high and low for. What a coincidence.
Searching the Nissan, officers find a handgun on the floorboards. At least one of the three suspects had an active warrant, too. And so we have yet another example of how car thieves are usually into other crimes instead of just stealing Altimas to feed their poor starving family.
