Surveillance footage shows the moment a suspect in Broward County, Florida stole a man’s car as he filled up the tires with air. We’ve seen this trick before, proving that criminals will wait until you’re vulnerable, then strike with impunity.
Wheel thieves are targeting Hondas in this major city.
However, the Broward Sheriff’s Office is spreading the video around in hopes the thief faces justice instead. The theft went down on August 31 at about 5 pm with the whole thing caught on surveillance cameras.
As you can see in the included video, the young kid in a hoodie, shorts, and slides just casually walks into the parking garage while appearing to talk on his phone. He then saunters up to a man filling the tires on his 2020 Chevy Equinox, reportedly asking what he was doing.
All that was done to make the victim feel at ease with the suspect standing there, figuring out when was the best time to strike. Once he ascertained the car had the key fob inside and the victim was sufficiently distracted, he just strolls up to the driver’s door, gets in, and drives off.
You can see the victim is perplexed that the kid stole his vehicle. The man obviously wasn’t anticipating such a thing, making him the perfect target.
We’ve seen thieves steal cars as the owners fill the tires with air. We’ve seen them steal vehicles while the owner fills up the gas tank. Same thing with delivery drivers running something up to a customer’s porch. The list goes on.
Car thieves wait for that moment when your defenses are down, the vehicle is running or at least the key fob is inside, and you’re distracted. The best thing you can do is to keep your guard up and not give them such an opportunity.
