Some carjackers in St. Louis, Missouri reportedly pretended to need help, luring their victim in before forcing him to strip to his underwear. This is the kind of story which puts everyone on edge, but there are some details which should be enough to call into question the victim’s judgment.
Carjackers are using Facebook to target victims.
We’ve seen carjackers and other robbers pose as victims of another crime or someone stranded who just needs some assistance. It’s a way to get people to let their guard down so they don’t see the danger coming.
In this case, First Alert 4 says the 41-year-old male victim was driving at around 2 am on the 5900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue when he saw a man in the middle of the road waving his arms while yelling for help.
When the victim stopped to see what was wrong, a second man appeared with a gun, demanding money and the 2016 Chevy Traverse the victim was driving. After the victim got out of the crossover, he was pistol whipped then ordered to strip to his underwear.
When police showed up, they found the guy in his socks and underwear, so the thieves apparently took everything else.
The really weird part of the story is the time of night the carjacking took place. If you’re driving around at 2 am and someone is asking for help, it could be legitimate but the chances you’re being targeted for a crime climbs dramatically versus if you see the same thing at 2 pm.
After all, criminals love targeting their victims when there aren’t many or any witnesses. The later at night it is, the less likely other people will see something like a carjacking. So if you find yourself out that late at night, which we actually don’t recommend for several reasons, just remember you can call 911 and let police know someone is asking for help without stopping yourself.
