Predictably, with thieves in many areas facing few if any consequences for their crimes are becoming far more aggressive. The latest twist comes out of Oakland, California where a restaurant owner was chased by thieves who eventually did a PIT maneuver, which flipped onto its roof. Then they robbed the victim at gunpoint.
Man was brutally beaten for trying to stop Oakland street takeover event.
The victim was targeted early on the morning of December 15 as he sat in his car outside the restaurant he owns. Seeing four cars moving toward him, the guy realized he was being targeted and so took off. That’s good he’s learned situational awareness because sitting in a parked car usually means someone is a sitting duck.
Surveillance footage from a building along the pathway of the ensuing chase, which was obtained by KTVU, shows a Doge Charger, Cadillac, and Jeep Trackhawk all pursuing the victim. We don’t know if there was a fourth car which didn’t show up in the video.
One of those vehicles was used to perform what a witness said was a PIT maneuver. The restaurant owner’s car hit a pole and flipped onto its roof. Then the thieves got out of their vehicles, one reportedly with an AK-style rifle. That’s when they took the victim’s money and handgun, then took off.
The icing on the cake in this whole incident is the disclosure in KTVU’s report that the victim and a witness both called 911 during the chase and were left on hold. Oakland was one of the cities which pulled funding from its police department in a quest to improve community justice. Now there aren’t enough dispatchers to answer emergency calls as they come in.
This is one of a string of shocking aggressive thefts or attempts made in Oakland recently, with many more that don’t make the news. The question many are left asking is what’s being done to solve the problem?
