New Nissan Supercar Will Be An EV

Emotions about the departure of the R35 Nissan GT-R certainly are mixed as the brand looks to replace it with the next-gen supercar. After all, with a 17-year run, many rightly believe the R35 is a little long in the tooth. But not everyone likes the news that Nissan is apparently for sure going with an all-electric vehicle for the successor.

The idea has been kicked around by Nissan for years, including when EV supercar prototypes have been shown off in the past. It’s not entirely surprising considering the R35 GT-R was incredibly technologically advanced when it debuted. In fact, some purists complained about how it was a “video game car” thanks to all the onboard electronics. My how times change.

Now there’s an uproar about an all-electric GT-R on the horizon. With the R35 sunsetting at the end of October, more attention is being paid to what’s coming down the pipeline. And with quite a few enthusiasts who have made the GT-R such a success absolutely loathing EVs like Teslas, they’re not exactly excited for this new chapter.

But it’s possible Nissan won’t use the GT-R moniker or call this the R36, and people have mixed emotions on that, too. It seems like no matter what Nissan does at this point it’s going to offend and turn off at least some people.

Reports claim the new EV supercar will whip out an earth-shattering 1,300 horsepower. That’s a big jump over the production maximum 700-hp extracted from the twin-turbo 3.8-liter in the R35. However, we consider that horsepower figure for the next model to be pure fantasy at the moment and will maintain that stance until Nissan confirms it, which it probably won’t for a while.

What will this do to the GT-R legacy so many cherish? Will this alienate enthusiasts from Nissan? And how would an all-electric supercar from the brand sell?
