Australian Lamborghini Driver Nailed For Lacking Special License

A 36-year-old man driving a Lamborghini Huracan was cited by police in South Australia for not having the new ultra high-powered vehicles (UHPV) license which became mandatory on December 1. Then police did a victory lap on social media, we’re sure to scare other performance car owners into compliance.

We believe Buc-ee’s is a national treasure.

In case you haven’t heard, and we think even a fair number Australians who drive vehicles that qualify haven’t, the new UHPV license is necessary for anyone driving a ride that weighs up to 4.5 tonnes and has a power-to-weight ratio of 276 kilowatts per tonne or more. It’s designed to specifically target supercars and hypercars, although some other vehicles fall into those specifications.

To show they’re not just trying to play gotcha, the government allows anyone to enter the license plate for their car into a handy phone app and see if they need to pay a bunch of extra money, take a special course, then be told you can operate your own vehicle safely. The benevolence is astounding.

Instead of just warning people for the first bit, it looks like police are just going to go hard and hit violators with a fine up front. That’s good for revenue, plus we suspect the attitude is anyone with a nice car can afford it.

Sadly, in this case the driver brought the traffic stop on himself because his Lambo didn’t have a rear license plate. That’s going to get you in a lot of trouble just about anywhere, although police didn’t say if he was cited for that violation as well.

Stories like this one make us thankful to live in the United States. While we have our fair share of problems, people here seem to be far less accepting of these types of rules created for the sake of having more rules.
