Deputies from Spokane County, Washington were recently able to recover a rental car reported stolen out of Dallas, Texas back in October. The woman who was caught driving the Dodge Durango said she was “too busy to return it” says the sheriff’s office in a release. We’ve never heard an excuse like that before.
Watch Las Vegas police skillfully corner a truck thief.
According to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, at about 6:45 am on December 5 Flock license plate readers in the Spokane area received a hit on the Durango’s Florida license plates. Deputies looked in the area where the vehicle was detected, finding the Dodge and detaining the 33-year-old female driver.
After being Mirandized, she explained that she rented the SUV at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport on October 21, then drove it straight to Spokane. She originally only rented the vehicle for one day. We looked it up, and according to Google that’s a 27 hour drive of 1,868 miles, so that’s interesting.
However, the woman said she became “too buy to return it” once the rental window closed and that her attempts to get in touch with the rental company were unsuccessful. We’re not sure what company she used, but with modern technology we haven’t heard of anyone not being able to contact a rental service at all.
Now here’s the real kicker: the woman told deputies at one point the rental company reached out to her, warning if she didn’t return the Durango it would be reported as stolen. We’re pretty sure she could have replied to that and the rental company gladly would have done any reasonable accommodations to get the vehicle back.
Instead, this woman kept driving the Dodge for over a month after it was supposed to be returned. Maybe she figured the company had no ide where the SUV was (they probably did since most use GPS trackers) and she likely didn’t realize there are Flock license plate readers in Spokane. That technology proved her downfall as the rental company wants to pursue theft charges.
