Car thieves broke into a Michigan car dealership, stealing three high-end performance cars, then leading police on a multi-county chase. Watching the surveillance footage of the heist and hearing from police what happened it’s obvious this was a professional car theft crew that’s hit dealers and run from police multiple times before.
Thief steals cars from dealership, then sets it on fire.
They broke into the Caledonia dealership in the middle of the night, smashing a window to gain entry. Thanks to the security system the owner was alerted to the activity and he in turn called police.
In the meantime, the thieves used a Ram TRX to plow through one of the garage doors, allowing them to drive a Z06 Corvette and Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye outside. When police suddenly descended, the suspects took off in the far faster vehicles.
They were obviously most interested in the Redeye and it’s not hard to understand why. Those muscle cars sell for a premium, including on the black market, so they stood to make a lot from stealing it.
Police say the crew was blocking officers from reaching the Redeye by surrounding it with the other vehicles. However, a spike strip skillfully deployed ensured the muscle car didn’t make it far at all.
But the suspects had a plan to get their buddy out of the Redeye and into another stolen ride without police getting near, once again demonstrating it wasn’t their first rodeo. These guys knew what they want and they knew where the dealership stored the more valuable rides. As the owner mentions to WOOD TV8, they were able to get through multiple layers of security to steal those specific vehicles.
At least the Redeye was recovered with minimal damage. The other two cars were also located after the suspects abandoned them. Police were able to arrest one suspect, a 19-year-old from Detroit. Authorities are still on the hunt for the rest of the crew.
Dealerships continue to be popular targets for car thieves. Even when they install more security, like what the owner of this one did, these professional crews get craftier, too.
