A war is being waged inside the halls of GM over the potential return of the Camaro to Chevy’s model lineup. That’s according to a new report, which claims management at the automaker have quashed plans for a seventh-generation Camaro, but that the fight is far from over.
Ford has issued yet another big recall, this time for the Bronco.
The Camaro wasn’t a hot seller for its sixth and for now final generation, especially right before it was cancelled. That fact is probably working against a group that recently presented a proposal to management inside GM, but were shot down, as reported by GM Authority.
Apparently, the powers that be inside General Motors feel there isn’t a strong enough business case for reviving the Camaro. It sounds like management doesn’t believe enough people will be lining up to buy a muscle car. Maybe GM can come out with another generic crossover instead?
But the GM Authority report notes the fight for the Camaro’s return isn’t over, yet. There’s reportedly still an effort underway to bring the legendary nameplate back, although the chance of that isn’t as good as it was before.
In other words, the internal war at GM is being won by management right now, which doesn’t want the Camaro to make a comeback, at least not yet. As gearheads, we don’t like that one bit.
We’ve heard all kinds of rumors about GM possibly bringing the Camaro back as an EV or a crossover, even an all-electric crossover. Considering the goofy things the automaker has been doing, like using the legendary Blazer name for a small crossover, including an all-electric model, such poor decisions wouldn’t surprise us, although we would be disappointed.
In a way, it’s better the Camaro stay dead than for the name to be trotted out on some quasi-performance model that just makes a mockery of the muscle car.
