Ford is about to launch a new service for F-Series trucks which would pay owners $2,500 in the event the pickup is stolen or damaged by a thief. That might not sound like much, but it’s part of an innovative Security Package which shows the automaker is trying to combat the car theft trend to an extent on its end.
Ford gets picky with the Mustang GTD.
That cash obviously isn’t meant to replace a stolen vehicle, but it hopefully would cover the insurance deductible if an owner had to make a claim. In this market, no other automaker offers such a thing, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that changes soon.
For now, the $2,500 payout is only available on 2024 and 2025 trucks for 40 different states and the District of Columbia. Canada, sadly, isn’t part of the coverage. Plus, truck owners must have the FordPass app with notifications enabled to qualify.
To further address the issue, the company offers the Ford Security Plan, which was recently updated. It’s now available for gas and hybrid F-150s as well as certain Super Duty trims, but not the Lightning.
For $7.99 a month of $79.95 a year, owners get access to helpline for assistance in recovering a stolen truck. The service also allows real time alerts through the FordPass app if someone tampers with or steals a vehicle, including doing a factory reset. A Start Inhibit function allows owners to disable the ignition remotely so the Ford can’t be started, even if the key is detected by the truck.
Some are shocked car theft is still a huge problem because they believed the assertion that covid lockdowns were to blame for their spike. The truth is car theft was already on a huge upswing before the pandemic and has continued to increase in most areas year over year since.
