People are shocked seeing dashcam footage of a car falling off an overpass and onto Interstate 5 in Sacramento, California. Thankfully, the horrific aftermath didn’t involve another vehicle being hit, but the video does show multiple cars weren’t too far away from where the first vehicle initially landed.

The man whose dashcam recorded the incident told KCRA 3 he was still in shock hours after it happened. You can see in the video the car sheered off part of a tree as it plummeted over the guardrail on the interstate overpass, then fell onto the road below.
Just like we see in so many other accidents, the other drivers had mere seconds to react. This is why driving distracted, even just for a little bit, could be the difference between avoiding a horrific crash and not.
A KCRA 3 reporter was able to spot the tire marks of where the Toyota (we believe it’s a Camry) hopped the curb onto the sidewalk, crashing through a tree as it rocketed off the overpass. The driver is in critical condition.
Why that driver veered off the road to begin with isn’t clear. We’ve seen crashes like this before caused by medical conditions, distraction, and intoxication. But we couldn’t even begin to say if any of those were a factor in this situation.
While this accident could’ve involved multiple fatalities, it instead was contained to just the one vehicle. Obviously that’s still a horrible situation for the driver and that person’s family, but it could have been so much worse.
When you’re behind the wheel, be ready for unexpected things like this to happen. While you might drive for years and not experience such a thing, a split second decision or lack of preparation could determine if you walk away from something like this.
