Teenage Thieves Steal Camaro ZL1 For Disneyland Road Trip

Two juvenile car thieves are facing charges after stealing a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and leading police on a chase that reportedly began as an adventure to get to Disneyland, a destination that gave the incident a uniquely Californian absurdity. The ZL1 is one of the most capable production Camaros ever built, with a supercharged LT4 engine and suspension tuning developed in part through Nürburgring testing, making it a somewhat incongruous choice of conveyance for an adolescent joyride. The pursuit that followed the theft covered considerable distance before officers brought the situation to a controlled conclusion.

Juvenile vehicle theft cases involving iconic or high-performance cars tend to attract disproportionate media attention, partly because of the incongruity of young perpetrators in sophisticated machinery and partly because the motivation — thrill-seeking rather than commercial exploitation — gives the story a different emotional character than organized vehicle theft. The young ages of those involved complicate the legal process significantly, with juvenile justice considerations creating a very different framework than would apply to adult perpetrators. The Camaro owner’s vehicle was recovered, though not without sustaining damage during the pursuit.
