Nails Left Point-Up In Massachusetts Roads

In one of the weirder stories we’ve seen lately, someone or a group of people on the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts placed nails point-up on roads and in private driveways. We’ve seen people deflate the tires on trucks and SUVs as a form of eco terrorism, as well as someone slash a family’s tires for no apparent reason, but this is still a weird one.

Woman calls AAA for roadside assistance at an awkward moment.

The incident in question happened in the early morning hours of Good Friday, April 18. A police officer in Falmouth was out patrolling when he spotted nails sticking up in a road. That officer along with some colleagues started scouting out the area on foot, finding dozens of nails on the road and in driveways, all with the points up.

An image shared by Falmouth Police Department even showed an officer using a magnetic roller to collect the nails faster, which is pretty brilliant.

Obviously, someone was trying to damage car tires. Falmouth Police said in total 478 nails were collected. Wouldn’t you have loved to have been the one to count them all?

Why anyone would want to puncture so many car tires, taking the time to place all those nails just so, is a mystery. Local news station Boston 25 spoke with some residents of the Falmouth neighborhood where the nails were discovered, and they shared theories from teenage pranksters to a bored carpenter.

The teenagers theory isn’t a bad one, but the carpenter one can’t be serious. We could joke and say someone who owns a local tire shop is behind this as a way to drum up business. But it could just as easily be someone with a mental illness or who just has a grudge against the entire community.

Police in Falmouth are asking members of the public who have security or dashcam footage of the nails, or saw anything relating to it, to step forward with that information. For now, it seems who left the nails and why remains a mystery.
