After a merger between ailing Nissan and Japan’s second-largest automaker, Honda, fell through, it seems the country’s largest automaker, Toyota, might come to the rescue. We never thought we’d live to see the day when Nissan and Toyota would be working together, but these are truly strange times.

Hackers show how they control the steering on a Nissan Leaf remotely.

It’s no secret the clock is ticking for Nissan, with some reports claiming the car company has just months until it’s no longer financially viable. While it has revealed a turnaround plan that involves layoffs, restructuring of manufacturing around the globe, and other cost-cutting measures, the automaker also needs an injection of fresh cash.

Meanwhile, Toyota is flush with money, so it could come in on a white horse and rescue Nissan. We wondering how diehard fans of the brand, who typically display nothing but disdain for Toyotas and people who drive them, would feel about this move.

But Nissan is desperate after Honda left it in the lurch following a huge disagreement between the two in February. There was talk of reconciliation between the companies, but that still hasn’t happened as the situation continues to get worse.

According to CBT News, Toyota wouldn’t be buying Nissan, at least not yet. Instead, it would be providing financial and strategic resources as Nissan restructures. This is all based on rumors and unnamed sources, so keep that in mind.

We would imagine the situation is rather fluid between Toyota and Nissan, so the ultimate outcome could look different than what’s being rumored at the moment. It’s possible we’ll see some collaboration vehicles between the two in a few years, like what Toyota has done with the Supra and BMW or the GR 86 and Subaru.

For enthusiasts, this could mean thanks to Toyota the Nissan Z won’t be going away and a next-gen GT-R will finally come to market. But maybe there will be Toyota or Lexus versions of those vehicles? We’ll see.
