An alleged member of the Kia Hyundai Boyz, a criminal network that has been responsible for a significant portion of Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts across the country, was taken into custody in Scottsdale, Arizona following a law enforcement investigation into theft activity in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The arrest represents one of several recent enforcement actions targeting the network, which exploited a widely publicized vulnerability in Kia and Hyundai vehicles that made certain models exceptionally easy to steal without a key. The gang’s activities generated enormous media coverage and prompted significant backlash against both automakers.

Kia and Hyundai have since implemented security updates for the affected models, but millions of vehicles were sold during the window when the vulnerability existed and not all have been updated. Law enforcement agencies in multiple cities have worked to dismantle cells of the theft network, with varying degrees of success. The Scottsdale arrest adds to the list of prosecutions moving through the courts related to the organized theft ring that became one of the most widely covered automotive crime stories of recent years.
