The first month of data for San Francisco speed cameras are in and pretty much everyone is floored at the numbers. Abou 1,000 speeders have been captured daily, with over 31,000 warnings issued in that first month.

Apparently, a lot of drivers in San Francisco have a heavy foot. That seems to be especially true on Fulton Street, which the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency says accounts for just under half of the warnings issued.

Interestingly, authorities have noticed a spike in speeding on Tuesdays during the morning commute. For some reason, people are in more of a hurry then than any other time of the week.

Since these speed cameras are a pilot program, for now they’re only issuing warnings to violators, even if a driver is going over 20 mph above the speed limit. However, the gloves come off once the whole city is covered by speed cameras.

Workers are still installing devices on different streets throughout San Francisco, a process authorities tell NBC Bay Area they hope to have completed by the first week in June. Then there will still be a 60 day period of continued warnings before the cameras start issuing citations with fines.

We know a lot of people don’t like speed cameras for a number of reasons. While regular cops can get things wrong, speed cameras which are completely impartial can also make mistakes. Plus, quite a few drivers see them as a way for municipalities to just make money off the population.

At least the citations issued by San Francisco speed cameras won’t go on a driver’s record. That’s great since there have been cases of drivers getting several citations in a month, week, or even a day.

Supposedly, the point is to get drivers to stop speeding, however the debate about whether cameras do that or not rages on.
