A small classic car dealer in Phoenix, Arizona caught fire on the afternoon of May 21 and several cars were damaged. We hate seeing this sort of thing, but at least in this case nobody, including the responding firefighters, was hurt.
Honda has made dealers in California very angry.
Phoenix Fire Department was able to get hoses inside the building and stop the flames from spreading. However, about 15 to 17 vehicles were damaged in the blaze, reports Fox 10. It ignited at about 5 pm so employees noticed it and were able to call for help quickly.
Thanks to the quick actions of firefighters, about 20 classic cars were saved and the building is still standing. While this situation is sad, this is still a win compared to other dealership fires we’ve seen.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it’s believed it started in a single classic car’s engine compartment. There are number of ways that could happen, from a slight fuel leak to loose wiring and even brake fluid leakage.
This is a great reminder as the weather is nice and warm to maintain your hobby cars and regularly check under the hood. Detecting leaks and other problems early not only can help prevent damage to expensive components, it can help prevent a fire.
It’s also a good idea to have a fire extinguisher in your garage or wherever you store you cars. Even better is having an automatic fire suppression system installed. After all, some vehicle fires happen when nobody is around to notice until the whole building is going up in flames.
Storing oil rags is a bad idea and you need to keep any flammable liquids away from furnaces, water heaters, or anything with a pilot light.
