Car Launches Into The Air At A Texas Roundabout

In a scene that’s a little too familiar to us by now, a driver went straight through a Texas roundabout, launching the car into the air, crashing on the other side. Sadly, the vehicle then crashed into a home. We guess for people who haven’t seen this sort of thing, it’s shocking, but we’re just not that surprised.

Guys tow a mobile home with a beat up old Ford Expedition.

That isn’t to say we think this sort of thing should be normal – it shouldn’t. However, Fox 4 in Dallas-Fort Worth says people in that neighborhood claim this sort of thing has happened repeatedly at that same roundabout.

We’ve seen some people saying this is the result of “stupid American drivers” who just know nothing about roundabouts. That was a funny, elitist thing to say twenty years ago, but we think at this point with roundabouts even in rural areas that’s not really true.

Surveillance footage of the crash captured on a nearby home shows the car that crashed was speeding before entering the roundabout. You can hear the tires squeal as the driver tries to turn, but the momentum carries the vehicle straight ahead.

Sure enough, a video neighbors shared of a crash that happened in February is the same scenario: a speeding car fails to slow down and make the turn, the tires squealing as it hits the curb in the roundabout and launches through the air.

Different solutions to the problem are being considered, from more signs to water-filled barriers. Hopefully they zero in on something that works.

One interesting thing mentioned in Fox 4’s report is that a city council member cites traffic data about the intersection, showing it had fewer crashes once it was transformed into a roundabout. In other words, the roundabout really isn’t the problem.

Is the problem drunk drivers? People looking at their phone? What do you think?
