On June 17, just two days from now, Chevy will reveal an all-new Corvette model that promises to redefine the car. We hate to load too much hype into this thing just in case it doesn’t even begin to live up to that, but if the rumors that have been flying around are true, this thing is going to be wild.
GM has trademarked an interesting name.
To chum the waters, Chevrolet took to Instagram and shared a teaser video, announcing, “The hype is real. A new Corvette is coming.” In the footage, the date June 17 is displayed, then the current Corvette badge is replaced by a stylized “X.”
Theories about what the new Corvette might be abound. But for a long time, we’ve been hearing about the Zora being in development, so it could be that. If so, that would be the second production all-wheel-drive C8 Corvette.
Another theory is this will be the much-rumored ZR1e, a hybrid all-wheel-drive version of the upcoming C8 ZR1. Instead of a hybrid system designed to save fuel, the supercar is supposed to have one or two electric motors in the front driving those wheels, thus making it all-wheel-drive while also adding to the potency.
A third theory that’s being kicked around in Corvette forums and social media enthusiasts groups is the fact Chevy has used an “X” to name a C6 model back in the day. A one-off Z06x was created for SEMA in 2010.
That car was a 1LZ with a lot of its interior stripped and a full roll cage added. There was a single racing seat and harness setup. Plus, the track-ready sports car came with stiffer struts, bigger stabilizer bars, lighter wheels, and other racing-focused equipment.
In other words, some stripped-down, track-prepped version of the Z06 or ZR1 is a possibility, although perhaps not as likely as the other two.
We’ll have to see what Chevy has cooked up in just a couple of days.
