Report: Second Ferrari EV Delayed Because Nobody Wants It

Ferrari has been cooking up its second EV model, which was supposed to launch next year, but it’s been pushed back. While there have been conflicting opinions about why the powers that be in Maranello delayed the launch to 2028, an explosive new report claims the automaker realized nobody really wants the thing.

BMWs will feature lightweight body panels made of flax.

Already, Ferrari delayed the launch of its first EV from October 2025 to Spring 2026, so this isn’t much of a surprise. Still, the details Reuters reveals in its exclusive report, which cites two anonymous sources in the company, should be troubling for the entire auto industry.

We see a lot of automotive media outlets talking about how electrification is still inevitable even as there’s growing feedback indicating the opposite. Add to that the sources inside Ferrari which told Reuters even the very wealthy are tiring of the electric car push.

Apparently, Ferrari has concluded demand for luxury EVs is waning after it hit a feverish pitch just a few years ago, which was when Maranello announced it would be joining the bandwagon. But there can be real advantages to arriving late to the party.

While many will talk about the visceral appeal of roaring ICE powertrains, particularly V12s and V8s which have helped make Ferrari famous, there are other issues with electric cars. The weight of the batteries and the lack of “sustained power” from them are two problems EV enthusiasts hate hearing because deep down inside, they know those are real stumbling blocks.

Instead of just axing the second EV model, the two sources told Reuters the plan is to use the extra two years to further refine the company’s electric powertrain technology.

But, as Reuters rightly notes, other automakers in the luxury sports car space have also been quietly rolling back their electrification plans. It seems the whole mantra of “the future is electric” is starting to crumble apart as reality increasingly sets in.
