Mitsubishi has announced a recall affecting more than 91,000 Outlander SUVs in the United States, citing a defect that poses a safety risk to occupants and requires a dealer repair to resolve.

The Outlander is Mitsubishi’s best-selling vehicle in the US market and one of the brand’s primary products since the company restructured its North American lineup around a focused set of crossover models. A recall of this scope affects a significant portion of recent Outlander production.

The specific nature of the defect was identified through Mitsubishi’s own quality monitoring processes and consumer complaint analysis. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail and scheduled for remedy service at no charge through their local Mitsubishi dealer.

Owners can verify whether their specific vehicle is included in the recall using the NHTSA VIN lookup tool or Mitsubishi’s own recall verification system. The company said parts and repair procedures would be available at dealers before owner notifications are sent.

No accidents or injuries related to the defect had been confirmed prior to the recall announcement. Mitsubishi characterized the action as precautionary based on internal testing that identified conditions under which the affected system could fail.
