Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted an operation at Hyundai’s electric vehicle manufacturing complex in Bryan County, Georgia, drawing attention to one of the most significant foreign automotive investments in US manufacturing history.
The Hyundai Metaplant America facility was built with major state and federal incentives as part of the domestic EV manufacturing strategy. ICE’s presence created a sensitive situation given the plant’s economic and political importance.
Hyundai cooperated with federal authorities and emphasized its commitment to lawful employment practices. Production was not reported to be significantly disrupted.
The operation prompted questions about workforce vetting practices at large manufacturing operations and their contractors, particularly during the rapid hiring that accompanied the plant’s ramp-up phase.
