A man in Fairview Heights, Illinois drove his Chevrolet Camaro into a marked police cruiser in what investigators described as a deliberate act, reportedly motivated by animosity toward law enforcement.

The incident took place on Old Collinsville Road while a Fairview Heights officer had pulled over a separate vehicle for an expired registration. The officer’s patrol car was parked along the shoulder with its emergency lights active.

Witnesses reported seeing the Camaro veer toward the stationary police vehicle rather than merge away. The impact caused visible damage to the cruiser, though the officer was not inside the car at the moment of the collision.

Officers quickly detained the Camaro driver at the scene. During questioning, the suspect reportedly made statements indicating his actions were intentional and connected to his views on law enforcement.

The suspect was arrested and faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer and criminal damage to government property. Prosecutors were reviewing the case to determine whether additional charges related to the motivation behind the attack might apply.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that intentional attacks on police vehicles and officers have consequences that extend well beyond traffic offenses. Striking a marked cruiser with emergency lights activated carries serious criminal penalties in Illinois.

The officer involved was uninjured. The patrol vehicle sustained damage to its rear quarter panel and bumper, and was removed from service pending repair assessment.

Local police agencies have noted an increase in incidents where civilians appear to deliberately interact aggressively with law enforcement personnel or vehicles, prompting renewed calls for community outreach programs.
