A series of illegal street takeovers across Massachusetts escalated into violence over the weekend, resulting in damaged police vehicles and multiple arrests. Authorities reported at least four major incidents across Boston, Middleborough, and Randolph, where large crowds gathered to block roads for illegal drag racing and driving stunts.

Boston Cruiser Set on Fire

One of the most serious incidents occurred in Boston, where a police cruiser was struck with fireworks and caught fire early Sunday. Prosecutors say more than 100 people surrounded the vehicle and threw debris as it burned. The officer inside was able to escape safely after backup officers intervened, using Tasers and, in some cases, drawing firearms to disperse the crowd.

Arrests Made

Two Rhode Island residents, 18-year-old Julian Bowers of Cumberland and 19-year-old William Cantwell of Warwick, were arrested and arraigned in court Monday. Bowers was released on $500 bail, while Cantwell remains held on a $1,000 bond.

A Second Incident in Middleborough

In Middleborough, approximately 50 vehicles gathered late Saturday night in a shopping plaza parking lot. Troopers say a driver in a Connecticut-registered Dodge Charger struck an officer before fleeing onto I-495. The pursuit was called off after the driver crossed into Rhode Island.

A Third Incident in Randolph

A separate large gathering occurred in Randolph early Sunday, where masked individuals reportedly launched fireworks at a police vehicle, struck it with objects, and climbed onto the hood while recording the incident.

Officials Respond

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu criticized outside participants for bringing what she called “dangerous behavior” into the city. Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden described the incidents as direct attacks on police and the community, pledging full accountability for those involved.

Investigations Ongoing

Authorities say investigations into all of the incidents remain active, with multiple agencies working together to identify additional individuals involved.
