Driver Airlifted After Solo Mustang Crash, DUI Investigation Underway

A single-vehicle crash on westbound State Route 152 near El Toro Ranch left one driver with serious injuries and under investigation for suspected DUI, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash occurred in the Hollister-Gilroy area and prompted a rapid emergency response.

What Investigators Believe Happened

Early findings indicate the driver lost control of the vehicle before a forceful impact that left the Mustang severely damaged. Responding officers described the vehicle as heavily crushed, reflecting the force of the crash. No other vehicles were involved, and no additional injuries were reported.

Airlifted for Treatment

Given the severity of the driver’s injuries, emergency crews requested an air ambulance after determining ground transport would not be sufficient. The driver was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released updates on the driver’s condition since the airlift.

DUI Investigation Remains Open

During the initial assessment at the scene, officers determined there was probable cause to arrest the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. As with any DUI investigation, this represents a preliminary finding rather than a conviction, and the driver is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The investigation remains ongoing as CHP officials work to confirm the factors that contributed to the crash, including possible impairment and speed.

Aftermath and Ongoing Review

The crash briefly disrupted traffic in the westbound lanes as crews worked to clear debris and secure the scene for investigators. The damaged vehicle was eventually removed, and traffic returned to normal. CHP officials continue reviewing evidence from the crash site and are expected to release further findings as the investigation progresses. The incident highlights the risks of impaired driving on rural highway stretches, where higher speeds and limited visibility can quickly turn a single error into a serious medical emergency.
