Illegal Street Takeover in Queens Turns Violent, Leaves Homeowner Hospitalized

An illegal street takeover in the Malba neighborhood of Queens escalated into violence early Sunday, leaving one resident hospitalized with serious injuries and a security vehicle destroyed by fire. Roughly 100 people and multiple vehicles reportedly took over streets in the normally quiet, upscale community near Whitestone to perform dangerous driving stunts.

How the Confrontation Started

According to residents, several vehicles stopped outside a local home, drawing a crowd of participants and onlookers onto private lawns. When the homeowner asked the group to leave, he was reportedly surrounded and attacked by between five and ten people. The assault left him with a fractured shoulder, broken ribs, and facial injuries, requiring his arm to be placed in a sling.

Neighbors Describe a Chaotic Scene

Residents said the crowd arrived within minutes, filling the streets with noise and smoke while people wandered onto private property. Some witnesses reported that participants carried flags and referenced traveling from the Bronx, raising concerns among locals about outside groups targeting quiet neighborhoods for these gatherings. Community members said the incident was unlike anything the neighborhood had previously experienced.

A Vehicle Set on Fire

During the takeover, a neighborhood security guard’s vehicle was reportedly taken and set ablaze, with flames visible from the street as residents watched, unable to safely intervene. The injured homeowner said he felt police response time was too slow, with the situation escalating significantly before officers arrived on scene.

Investigation Underway

By Monday, NYPD detectives were canvassing the area for video footage and witness statements to help identify those involved in the takeover and the assault. Residents are calling for stronger enforcement to prevent similar large-scale gatherings from forming so quickly in the future, and say they remain shaken by the intensity of the incident.
