Dense fog and a foggy split-second decision collided in Fresno County on Monday morning when a Dodge Challenger pulled into an intersection and struck the side of a passing school bus, sending a driver and a student to be checked for minor injuries.
A Stop Sign, Then a Second Guess
According to authorities, the Challenger came to a stop at a two-way stop intersection as it normally would. But the driver then proceeded into the crossing, where the vehicle struck the side of a school bus that was already moving through the intersection.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol pointed to dense fog blanketing the area at the time, saying reduced visibility made it harder to judge cross traffic and safe following distances — a factor investigators believe played directly into the driver’s decision to proceed.
Minor Injuries, Major Disruption
The impact damaged the side of the bus and brought emergency crews to the scene to check for injuries. Officials confirmed that both the Challenger’s driver and one student aboard the bus suffered minor injuries, while the rest of the students on board were checked over as a precaution. No other injuries were reported, and nobody involved needed critical care.
The bus was unable to continue its route right away, and the crash backed up traffic in the area while first responders worked to clear the roadway.
What Investigators Haven’t Said Yet
CHP has not released how many students were riding the bus at the time, how fast either vehicle was traveling, or whether any citations have been issued. The cause remains under review as officers work through roadway conditions and driver actions leading up to the crash.
In the meantime, the agency is using the crash as a reminder for drivers to slow down and use extra caution near stop-sign intersections during foggy conditions, particularly during morning hours when school bus traffic is heaviest. Authorities said more details could be released once the review wraps up.
