Would-Be Carjacker Gets Bear Sprayed

Estimated read time 3 min read

Carjackings are up in many metropolitan areas, but an attempted carjacking was stopped in SeaTac, Washington by a bear spray-wielding man. We’ve seen people advocating the use of bear spray over mace and other non-lethal defense solutions, but this is the first time we’ve seen it used to stop a carjacker.

Porsche carjackers stopped by one simple device.

The incident in question started on the morning of December 26 after a couple stole a box truck from a business in the area and led police on a chase. After getting into a few hit-and-run accidents, the driver eventually wrecked out by a rest stop off Interstate 5.

Realizing they could have their pick of vehicles stopped to use the facilities, the man and woman crawled through the fence and started trying to carjack people. After a few unsuccessful attempts, the male suspect threw a 72-year-old woman out of her vehicle and climbed into the driver’s seat. The woman’s adult daughter and her child were in the backseat, with the woman hitting the male carjacker and screaming at him.

The victim’s son heard the commotion and left his car, pulling out his bear spray which he used to douse the face of the would-be carjacker. In its report, KOMO News mentioned the guy is retired law enforcement, which apparently has something to do with him purchasing bear spray for protection a few months ago – don’t ask us how or why.

What we do know is this guy was lucky, because instead of getting a face full of lead like what would happen in a lot of areas, he got a face of red pepper oil. Before anyone thinks the spray was more effective, the suspect then tried carjacking the guy who sprayed him, only the former cop was smart enough to not leave his keys in his vehicle. So we really have to question just how well bear spray works if someone is armed and trying to kill you, which thankfully wasn’t the case in this situation.

Still, it’s probably better to carry bear spray than nothing, just don’t expect it to drop an attacker cold. Instead, after that the criminal couple ran off, tried to carjack even more people parked further down the rest stop area, so it appears the spray didn’t really slow them down. Thankfully police did catch them afterward.
